Celebrating the Dog Days of August

MY WEEKLY THANK YOU NOTE TO GOD.
MY WEEKLY THANK YOU NOTE TO GOD.

It is the end of the third week of August.  Sirius, the Dog Star, can be seen in the morning sky.  The corn husks are browning, the humidity is starting to get a little less onerous, and the sun light is starting to give off that crisp autumnal clarity.

And then there are the tomatoes and sunflowers –

tomatoes

Those beauteous globes of red that burst with flavor and aroma.  I celebrated tomatoes this week by taking two bushels of these beauties and “putting them by” as my grandmother used to say.  Come December and January we will have a taste of the Dog Days to give us faith that the cruel short days of cold will end and red and yellow will again rule the day.

Wishing you a bite of a juicy tomato and a vase full of sunflowers,

Bernadette
