52 WEEKS OF THANKFULNESS – WEEK 9

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

I invite you to come and join me on this pilgrimage to change the world through thankfulness.  Perhaps if enough of us join together we can change the negative climate that exists and is overtaking our planet. Together we can move our fellow citizens of to a better, higher and finer place.

At the end of the post you will find a link up frog and I hope you will join me on this venture and once a week write a post and link up to others and share what you are thankful for this week.

I had very many things to be thankful for this past week.

I hope that by writing these posts that we will move together beyond thankfulness into appreciation. Because appreciation for the moments and things for which we give thanks requires us to be mindful of our lives. “Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

It is that time of the year in New Jersey when the produce is bursting from the farmer’s market stands and is filled with such flavor.  The aroma and the beauty of the tomatoes and peaches fills my heart with such gratitude to be alive and relishing this bounty.

Earth who gives to us this food.

Sun who makes it ripe and good.

Dearest Earth and Dearest Sun.

We’ll not forget what you have done

I recently had the great pleasure of spending a few days with my friends at their beach house.  One of the things my friend and I enjoy doing together is taking a morning walk.  And, boy, what a treat these morning walks were.  We took our walks on the boardwalk and had the whole ocean to admire.  The sun shone on us, the temperatures were low and their was no humidity – what more could a walker ask for?

As we walked along the second morning, a woman started directly for us with a huge smile on her face.  The smile was so happy that her mood was infectious.  I quickly found myself smiling back at her although I had no idea who she was and what we were smiling about.

She excitedly stopped us and pointed to the ocean.  “Quick!  Look out there, there are dolphin pods out there.”  And sure enough the dolphins came into view doing their happy dance in the ocean and quickly my heart was lighter and my mood even more lifted.

She went on with her walk and we continued on with ours.  But I just can’t get over how extraordinary that encounter was.  My unknown friend was bursting with joy and by sharing it with us the joy multiplied.

I hope that by writing these posts that we will move together beyond thankfulness into appreciation. Because appreciation for the moments and things for which we give thanks requires us to be mindful of our lives. Thankfulness is the soil in which joy thrives.

Gratitude List
by Laura Foley

Praise be this morning for sleeping late,
the sandy sheets, the ocean air,
the midnight storm that blew its waters in.
Praise be the morning swim, mid-tide,
the clear sands underneath our feet,
the dogs who leap into the waves,
their fur, sticky with salt,
the ball we throw again and again.
Praise be the green tea with honey,
the bread we dip in finest olive oil,
the eggs we fry. Praise be the reeds,
gold and pink in the summer light,
the sand between our toes,
our swimsuits, flapping in the breeze.

Dom and I returned from our vacation this past week.  The day before we left, we buried our dear friend Maggi.  The enormity of losing this very special person moved me very quickly from just giving thanks for being on vacation into an intense appreciation for every day’s experience.  I think the poem by Laura Foley expresses my feelings during this vacation.

I hope that by writing these posts that we will move together beyond thankfulness into appreciation. Because appreciation for the moments and things for which we give thanks requires us to be mindful of our lives. Thankfulness is an expression of our appreciation for life. Sometimes we get so focused on life’s challenges that we lose sight of being grateful for simply having a life to live.

This week I have deep gratitude to be on vacation with my husband.  We are on a little island in the Caribbean that we have visited many times and have almost come to think of us our home away from home.

Vacation

The places we have gone to
and the trips that we have taken
Photographs of love and laughs
of another family vacation.

It doesn’t matter where we go
as long as we’re together
At different ages, on these pages-
we’ll be on vacation forever.

Having lost a dear friend just recently this week my thoughts go to being thankful for the gift of friendship.  I don’t think anyone said on their deathbed that they regretted the time spent with friends.

A Time To Talk – Poem by Robert Frost

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, What is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

This week I am acutely aware that when friendship calls that I should heed the call because time is a wasting.

I hope that by writing these posts that we will move together beyond thankfulness into appreciation. Because appreciation for the moments and things for which we give thanks requires us to be mindful of our lives. Thankfulness is an expression of our appreciation for life. There is a poem by Ronald Wallace titled Blessings.  It is a poem I am particularly fond of because it illustrates how wonderful blessings can be on an ordinary day.  Saturday was like this:

“Some days misery
no longer loves company;
it puts itself out of its.
There’s rest for the weary.
There’s turning back.
There are guarantees.
I can be serious.
I can mean that.
You can quite
put your finger on it.”

On Saturday Dom and I, along with our grandson and his Mom and Dad, found ourselves in New York City again.  We stumbled upon a street fair on Eight Avenue.

MOMENTS THAT MOVED APPRECIATION INTO THANKFULNESS

  • Observing this polyglot of people walking down the Avenue in peace.
  • Watching street vendors preparing and serving unfamiliar food to people who were eating these foods with relish.
  • Appreciating the NYPD’s quiet presence at the fair and watching people smile at the men who were giving aid and protection.

Yes, it truly was a Saturday when misery no longer wanted company.
