52 WEEKS OF THANKFULNESS – WEEK 43

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

I invite you to come and join me on this pilgrimage to change the world through thankfulness.  Perhaps if enough of us join together we can change the negative climate that exists and is overtaking our planet. Together we can move our fellow citizens of to a better, higher and finer place.

Dom and I went to New York City this past weekend.  We went to celebrate his birthday.  As I have written about in the past, Dom has a great love for music, particularly the opera.  So I bought us tickets to see Aida which was performed at the Metropolitan Opera on Saturday afternoon.  New York City has been the stage for some of the happiest and proudest moments of my life and the saddest and most heartbreaking moments of my life.  I am thankful that the heartbreak has not broken our spirits.

I invite you to come and join me on this pilgrimage to change the world through thankfulness.  Perhaps if enough of us join together we can change the negative climate that exists and is overtaking our planet. Together we can move our fellow citizens of to a better, higher and finer place.

Dom and I have lived in our small town for 38 years.  During that time we have had the pleasure of meeting many interesting people.  Some of the people have made a place in our hearts and became loved ones.  Other people have touched our lives and changed our lives and then moved on to different places.  Saturday night we had the rare opportunity of reconnecting with a couple who touched our family’s life and improved it.  When my oldest sons were little boys they went through a bad patch of seemingly not knowing how to go about making friends.  The couple we reconnected with had two children who went out of their way to befriend David and Andrew.  I don’t think Nancy and Dave probably even realize what a difference they made in my early days of mothering.  I am so thankful that the circle of life brought them back to me.

This past weekend found Dom and I celebrating the marriage of a wonderful young couple.  We have known Lauren since she was a young girl and it is with a heart filled with thankfulness that we watched her marry Chris the love of her life.  I always feel so thankful to be invited to witness the start of a couple’s life together because the occasion is always marked with so much love and hopefulness and gratitude from the couple for having found each other.

I have been thinking about our President this week.  And I was mentally preparing to write about what a killing field for friendship his election has become.  And then, twice in one day, I found myself speaking to strangers about the President and our country.  These conversations with strangers were filled with so much heart and a huge amount of insight.  These conversations filled my heart with hope for the future and for that I am thankful.

This morning finds me pondering friendship.  I have found that with some people our friendship just grows through the years like a beautiful pine – evergreen.  And, unfortunately, I have found that with others our friendship is like a tree that grows in fits and starts.  Some years it puts out an abundance of fresh green leaves and other years it is barren depending on the environment.

I have had the fits and starts relationship with J for many years.  This past year has been more fits than starts.  She has an enormous problem burdening her and I have been saddened by my inability to be a better friend to her.

But Saturday night, just by happenstance, we were thrown together and had an opportunity to open our hearts to each other.  I am so very thankful to have had this opportunity to express my love and concern.

THREE DAY QUOTE CHALLENGE – DAY 3 FRIENDSHIP

BERNADETTE AND DOM

And for my last friendship post I give you my husband who has been my best friend for 44 years.  He is a man who has truly honored his vows to love me for better or worse, richer or poorer, and in sickness and in health.  I am very blest.

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” Friederich Nietzsche

THREE DAY QUOTE CHALLENGE – DAY 2 FRIENDSHIP

BERNADETTE AND FRAN

Fran has shared her wisdom and her love with me for over half of my life.  She has been my compass that has kept me on the path even when I didn’t want to walk it.

“It is that my friends have made the story of my life.  In a thousand ways they have turned my limitations into beautiful privileges, and enabled me to walk serene and happy in the shadow cast by my deprivation.”

THREE DAY QUOTE CHALLENGE – DAY 1 FRIENDSHIP

NANCY AND BERNADETTE

I read the following poem the other day on Beth Ann Chile’s blog (It’s Just Life) and thought immediately of my friend Nancy who always makes time for everyone of her friends.

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don’t stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven’t hoed,
And shout from where I am, What is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

52 WEEKS OF THANKFULNESS – WEEK 10

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

I invite you to come and join me on this pilgrimage to change the world through thankfulness.  Perhaps if enough of us join together we can change the negative climate that exists and is overtaking our planet. Together we can move our fellow citizens of to a better, higher and finer place.

At the end of the post you will find a link up frog and I hope you will join me on this venture and once a week write a post and link up to others and share what you are thankful for this week.

I recently saw some images of sailboats that reminded me of my longtime friendship with Connie and Ginny.

NEW SAILBOAT

At one time we were three magnificent sailboats.  Our sails caught the wind sharply and our hull gleamed with fresh paint.

Now after having navigated the happy and sad seas of life our sails have been mended many times and the paint on our craft has faded but still maintains a beautiful patina that cannot be reproduced without having lived a long life.

OLD SAILBOAT

And I give thanks that we still have our friendship and we are still sailing our own boats.

I hope that by writing these posts that we will move together beyond thankfulness into appreciation. Because appreciation for the moments and things for which we give thanks requires us to be mindful of our lives. We’ve seen it all, tried it all, and even done it all.  I am so grateful that we’ve been through it together.

Thank you for joining me today,
