WORLD GRATITUDE DAY

SEPTEMBER 21, 2016

Gratitude Day is celebrated annually on the 21st September. The celebration of Gratitude Day allows both individual citizens and organisations within wider society to celebrate the broad meaning of gratitude in a variety of ways.

The celebration started in 1965 in Hawaii when an international gathering decided that it would be a good idea to have one day per year to formally express gratitude and appreciation for the many wonderful things to be found in the world. Following the meeting in Hawaii, many attendees marked Gratitude Day on 21st September 1966 when back in their own countries. Ever since then, the number of people celebrating Gratitude Day across the world has grown and grown.

A Day For Gratitude

The awareness of the benefits of having time in one’s life for gratitude, appreciation and positive reflection have become increasingly apparent. The hope of the founders of Gratitude Day is that by taking time, one day a year, to reflect on the many amazing things we have in our lives, it would positively impact our well-being and make us happier, more contented people.

CELEBRATE YOUR GRATITUDE THIS DAY AND ALWAYS,

52 WEEKS OF THANKFULNESS

52weekw

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

This Monday post became a Tuesday post this week due to the holiday.

I believe in the power of positive group energy.  Perhaps if enough of us join together we can change the negative climate that exists and is overtaking our planet.  Together we can move our fellow citizens of to a better, higher and finer place.

I hope that by writing these posts that we will move together beyond thankfulness into appreciation.  Because appreciation for the moments and things for which we give thanks requires us to be mindful of our lives.  One of the “mantras” that the great Vietnamese activist and teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, has written about in his book, The Art of Communicating, is: “I know you are there”.

At the end of the post you will find a link up frog and I hope you will join me on this venture and once a week write a post and link up to others and share what you are thankful for this week.

This holiday weekend my youngest son came to visit.  It has been a long time since we have come together as a family.  I was overwhelming thankful for this very rare opportunity.  But how did thankfulness become appreciation this weekend.  I think for me by taking the time to follow Thich Nhat Hanh word’s of wisdom to pay attention to the person in front of me, to let that person know that “I know you are there”.

THINGS THAT CAUSED MOMENTS OF APPRECIATION

  • Talking to my son about his visit with his brother who is severely brain injured.
  • Watching my daughter-in-law, despite her discomfort, treat everyone with loving kindness.
  • Watching the entire family, brothers, fathers, sons, grandfathers and grandson, just enjoy a lot of laughter over the game of bocce.

52 WEEKS OF THANKFULNESS

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

I hesitated to start this project at such an odd time of the year.  But then I reflected on the fact that the hands on my clock “keep on ticking into the future” at a very fast pace these days.  So I decided to seize the day and start this Monday feature.  At the end of the post you will find a link up frog and I hope you will join me on this venture and once a week write a post and link up to others and share what you are thankful for this week.

Saturday I spent a delightful day in New York City with my much loved husband and very dear friends.  It was a perfect day in every respect and one that I have every reason to be very thankful for.  But at small moments during the day appreciation arose and I experienced the day on a richer level.

THINGS THAT CAUSED MOMENTS OF APPRECIATION

  • Watching my husband and friend engrossed in a conversation.
  • Feeling a cool breeze when we crossed to the shady side of the street.
  • A big smile given to me by a small child while we waited to cross a street.
  • Being able to dine while appreciating the beauty of the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River.
  • The intimacy of riding in our car in the dark and speaking about our hopes and fears for our children.

Wishing you many moments of appreciation this week,

As I sit here watching the sun set and outline the winter trees and waiting for Dom’s Uncle to come and celebrate Valentine’s Day with us, I realize I no longer need the grand gesture on Valentine’s Day or in life.

The day started with breakfast with my funny valentines, my grandchildren.  Pancakes, bacon, and sausage were the requested menu.  The bacon caused them to break out into a bacon boogey to celebrate bacon in all its delicious baconess.  I joined in to the celebration and don’t remember many times dancing with so much happy abandon.

A little while later their daddy came to collect them and brought me roses.  A completely unexpected present.  The very best presents are the ones not hoped for or anticipated especially on a Hallmark Holiday.

And then this very sweet day dedicated to love ended with me having dinner with not one handsome man but three.

I end writing this post with the same feeling of gratitude that I started it earlier, that I have arrived at a place of appreciating the grandness in my life.

Hope your Valentine’s Day was filled with grand love,

Bernadette
