RETURN TO NEVERLAND

Wendy surveyed the room.  Her eyes wandered fondly over the toys.  Wendy had kept the room just as it was when Peter would visit and such merry times abounded.  John Darling would ride the horse and swing his sword leading the charge to Hook’s pirate ship.  Little Michael would toddle behind pushing his horse crying out for the Lost Boys to join the battle.  Wendy’s dolls wait patiently in their sweet bassinet for Peter’s return.  They  longed for Tinker Bell to once again sprinkle fairy dust and so they could magically take to the air and fly.  And there on the wall is the clock.  The keeper of that enchanted time stopped and never chimed again the day we Darling children decided to grow up.

Oh to return to Neverland once more is Wendy’s secret wish.  But she knows that it is not to be.  She is an old woman now with grandchildren.  But she muses, if the grandchildren come for a visit and sleep in her old rooms, maybe just maybe…..

    Charming, Bernadette. Wendy as a Grandmother – I suppose even storybook characters grow old and put away childish things, but my mind never wandered in those directions until I read your post. It could be the intro to an entirely new Pan novel. That would be a fun one to write, wouldn’t it?

    Wonderful use of the photo prompt – ex., the enchanted clock, etc.

        Hey – if I’m going to be involved, I want to audition for the role of Wendy myself (NY actor/director for decades and would LOVE to return to that field at my age now!)

        I’m rushing to sprinkle content below on comments I won’t be able to locate “backstage” on my return.

        I’m out the door until Thurs. (5/4) as soon as I “send.” Tink and I will be leaving for a cabin at a State Park in the hills of Kentucky with my friend Sam, whom I met in Knoxville, TN. when I was a freshman in college and we were both young and beautiful – lol – taking Social Dance because it counted as gym (and neither of us wanted to mess up our GPA’s and figured this would be an easy A).

        We had barely arrived when instructor told us to partner up – for the ENTIRE course. (Hmmmm – so which male can I stand to have pawing me for an entire quarter?) Sam was the only male in the class who was clearly not a jock, so I snapped him up. (I needn’t have worried, the athletes paired off with the cheerleaders) 🙂

        So began a life-long friendship, mostly by phone in the last decade or so – and we are both psyched to spend a few days catching up in person.

        I won’t be back online until Friday late-ish. Sam will be staying with me Thursday nite before driving home (and I have to deal with lease renewals and outside errands during the day).

        I hope your week is equally lovely – DITTO anyone else reading.

    I often wonder about childhood characters in their later days. You brought Wendy to life; these seem like dreams she would retain. Always waiting for Peter Pan. I think we all wait for pixie dust in our own ways. . .
