THIS IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO SPREAD THE LOVE ON VALENTINE’S DAY. HELP SPREAD THE WORD!
International Book Giving Day 2017

About
International Book Giving Day takes place on 14th February each year. The aim? To get books into the hands of as many children as possible.
14th February is about sharing the love of books! #bookgivingday
International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books.
* Most children in developing countries do not own books.
* In the United Kingdom, one-third of children do not own books.
* In the United States, two-thirds of children living in poverty do not own books.
International Book Giving Day’s focus is on encouraging people worldwide to give a book to a child on February 14th. We invite individuals to:
1) gift a book to a friend or family member,
2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read
3) donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital or shelter or to an organization that distributes used books to children in need internationally.
In addition, we encourage people to support the work of nonprofit organizations (i.e. charities) that work year round to give books to children, such as Room to Read (international), Books for Africa (international), Book Aid International (international), The Book Bus (international), First Book (U.S.), Reading is Fundamental (U.S.), Reach Out and Read (U.S.), Pratham Books (India), Indigenous Literacy Foundation (Australia), The Footpath Library (Australia), Nal’ibali (South Africa) and Duffy Books in Homes (New Zealand).
International Book Giving Day has continued to grow & grow. In 2014, International Book Giving Day was celebrated by people in Australia, Canada, South Africa, France, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the Philippines, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Nigeria, Nicaragua, Brazil, Egypt, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Macedonia, Malawi, Hungary, Malaysia, Israel, Denmark, Thailand, Indonesia, Jordan, China, Puerto Rico and Bulgaria. We hope that people around the world will think about the best ways to help children in need in their communities.

What a wonderful and worthwhile project – I have quite a few of my son’s children books to donate and I like the idea of printing out and attaching the bookplate! Shocking to read the number of children without books here and in the America. I wonder, is that accurate? Sad and worrying. Sharing this…

I, also, was shocked by that figure. It reinforces the importance of free public libraries.

Wonderful cause, Bernadette. I am surprised at the number of children without books. How unfortunate.

These are some great ideas for sharing the gift of books and reading! I didn’t realize that there was a special day dedicated to giving books, but I love it! When I was a student, I participated in Reach Out and Read, which provides books to pediatricians’ offices so that children and their parents can take a book home with them after their appointments. http://www.reachoutandread.org. One of the local food pantries where I live has a similar program and is always accepting donations. Sometimes, book stores will also collect books for children (I know that Barnes and Noble did this at Christmastime). There are so many ways to participate. Thanks for highlighting this very worthy cause which can change the lives of many with such a little effort!

Thanks for adding so many additional bsuggestions. We have an organization in our area called Story Storks. The visit the mother of every newborn and give her a book and a packet about the importance of reading to you children. ❤️📚

So often when I think about my gratitudes, I think of how grateful I am for language, books, writing, and literacy. It’s such a simple thing, but it really is quite profound!

What a great cause. I live near a title I funded school. This inspires me to make a box of books donation to the school. Thanks😊

Np :0) I ordered thirty beginning reader books from Amazon last night, and I am going to go to deliver them to a Head Start 4 year old class next week. My husband and I both think this is a great idea! Best of luck!

This is fabulous. I love seeing kids read. My grandkids pass their books to me as they grow too old for them. I have several people with whom I share them. Fantastic idea: spreading the word. ❤

What a great bunch of ideas. I’m glad I didn’t miss it. I actually have some books lying around by a fantasy author that I’m going to donate to a homeless shelter 🙂 Thanks for the reminder!

A truly wonderful (and much-needed) cause that I am only too happy to get fully behind. With a personal library of over 1500 books I shall be making my way to the local library with at least two or three bags of the most gently used of them to be distributed to any child that is in need of some reading material. Thanks for spreading the word.

To be fair (and as humble as possible for a natural egotist such as myself : (, the library is an amazing journey of approximately 45 feet which involves crossing the very intersection that I live at. Sometimes things have a way of working in our favor when we set out to help others I guess. : )
