FEMINIST FRIDAY

Today it is my pleasure to introduce you to Yulissa Arescurenaga.

Yulissa was born in Lima, Perus in 1991.  Immediately following her birth she was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.  From an early age Yulissa loved music.  With her parent’s support from an early age, she overcame her shyness and difficulties associated with Down Syndrome and adopted as her mantra “I CAN”.

In 2008 Yulissa took her first Zumba class.  From the first class Yulissa was smitten with Zumba.  She decided to follow her passion and become an instructor.  Yulissa practiced 6 hours a day for four years.  But all that effort paid off and she became the first Zumba instructor in the world with Down Syndrome.

Yulissa has faced many challenges in her young life.  One of the biggest obstacles has been people not believing in her abilities.  But she truly has stayed with her mantra and shown the world ‘I CAN”.

About Bernadette

I live in the small town of Haddonfield, NJ. I am at an age in my life when I seem to spend time thinking and musing about life. These musings are usually stimulated by my walks through Haddonfield, my reading of books and fellow bloggers, and my interaction with my group of fabulous family and friends.
