The summer solstice, the official start of summer is the longest day of the year, and this year it was accompanied by a fairly rare event: it coincides with a so-called “strawberry moon,” the folkloric name given to June’s full moon.
According to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” the strawberry moon was given that name by the Algonquin tribes because it occurs right at the height of the season when strawberries are harvested. Other names for this month’s full moon are the “hot moon” and the “rose moon.”
Isn’t it funny and wonderful that despite all the ways we have to entertain ourselves we can still be in awe of the moon?

I hope we manage to stay connected to the seasons and natural cycles. I’m profoundly influenced by them. I think it’s something that binds us together–no matter who we are or where we live, the same moon shines down on us. 🙂

We didn’t get to see this beautiful phenomenon, it was so cloudy and bucketing down with rain. I read that the last time it occurred was in 1967 – I doubt I saw it then either, I probably had my head in a book of Yevtushenko’s poems in a coffee bar or was dancing the night away at a friend’s party! I often lie in bed with the curtains open and watch the moon, it’s luminescence is captivating and I love all the shapes and shadows across its face.

I remember driving through a moonlit landscape with my children when they were young, and witnessing their wonder at how the moon ‘followed us around’! Now that everyone’s grown up and knows a little about science, I think about their fascination with the moon, and how beautiful those memories are!
