What a week it has been for recognition of women in the United States. The big announcement by the Treasury that Harriet Tubman will be featured on the front of the $20 bill.
But not only that, on the back of the $10 bill will be featured Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul.
Which leads me to the next huge celebration, for at last there is now a national monument to women’s equality. After women won the right to vote, Alice Paul bought a brick house near Capitol Hill in 1929. She moved the National Women’s Party into it so that they could continue to lobby for legislation that pertained to women such as property rights, equal pay, housing and employment and housing issues. They wrote the Equal Rights Amendment in that house. Unfortunately, this piece of legislation has not been enacted to this day.
President Obama has designated that house, the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum in Washington, D.C., as the United States’ first Women’s Equality National Monument.
What a historic week to celebrate.
Wishing us all many more of these historic opportunities to celebrate,
Bernadette
Shocking that I don’t know about this museum in DC. We go for the weekend several times a year. This will be ont he list for next time. Though I knew it, it is also shocking that ERA never passed…

Disgraceful that it hasn’t passed and even more disgraceful that the ‘modern’ woman is clueless about it…

The first state to grant suffrage to women was Wyoming, and there is a statue of one of the leaders there at the state capital in Cheyenne. It was a big week. Harriet Tubman is a beautiful choice, don’t you think?

Yes! So much to celebrate for women. So much to love about Barack even if he didn’t do it for us in public education.

Great news – and the perfect choice. Who better to replace a racist power monger (Jackson) than Harriet Tubman – the very anithesis of that?!

It is an exciting announcement. Thanks for sharing. I’m putting the Sewall-Belmont house on my list of want-to-visit spots for DC.
